Venus Williams Wears Nude Shorts, Shocks Tennis Spectators

Oh, Venus Williams: a woman perfectly capable of making headlines based solely on her outstanding tennis record — she’s won eight grand slam singles titles, plus Olympic gold — yet, unfortunately, she’s decided to take after her catsuit-wearing sister Serena and try to create news in a far less appealing way.

For Williams’ fourth round match of the Australian Open, the elder of the two champion siblings decided to thumb her nose at the tournament’s new policy banning revealing clothing (enforced after a star Australian player wore a sort of see-through top last year) and don a dress of her own design that featured flesh-colored tennis panties which made it appear as if she was going au naturel, well, down under.

Clearly an intentional move, Williams, who holds a fashion degree, took to her Twitter page to defend the outfit, which also included a flesh-colored panel underneath a yellow dress with a plunging neckline.

“My dress for the Australian Open has been one of my best designs ever! [Ed Note: Hanging out with Andre Leon Talley does not a tasteful "designer" make. Sigh.] Its (sic) all about the slits and the V-Neck,” she tweeted. “I am wearing undershorts the same color as my skin, so it gives the slits in my dress the full effect.”

Riiiight… because it’s ever so important to have your tennis dress mimic a red carpet gown with slits up to there or to trick viewers into believing you’re having a Britney Spears crotch-shot moment. Totally the effect you want to go for.

According to the Daily Mail, Williams also went on to explain her outfit — and thus promote her questionable design skills — at a press conference.

“This is completely my design. I just sketched it out. The whole idea is just about the illusion that I’m wearing a deep V-neck,” she said. “Then the idea was to wear shorts that were like the same color as my skin. It works very well, apparently.”

Or not.

What it does, rather, is distract from the dialogue of Williams’ game (she won in three sets, by the way, and she and Serena are now only a match apiece away from meeting each other in the semifinals) and keep viewers and critics of women’s tennis focusing on more petty — and sort of sexist — details like the players choices in clothes, jewelry, hairstyles and their grunting habits.

Williams’ peek-a-boo design, in addition to the fashion antics of other players, also doesn’t help the annoying branding of every young, somewhat good looking player (ahem, Maria Sharapova) as a sex symbol.

As for Venus the “designer” wanting to showcase her fashion line, we’d rather her choose a more appropriate venue — a fashion show in Miami, perhaps? — than a grand slam tournament. But maybe that’s just us.

Let us know what you think of Williams’ ploy in a comment below.

Designer Jewelry Lines Launching for Spring

Now that the glossies are bursting with spring clothing (or lack thereof), we’re checking out the latest crop of accessories to match: bangles and beads, bring it on! Excitingly enough, four notable designers make a jewelry debut this season.

These jewelry collections span all sorts of tastes and price points — from precious to streetwise, rubies to ribbons and five figures to $50.

Two of the new lines come from womenswear designers Peter Som and Behnaz Sarafpour.

Som decided to experiment with accessories while working on his Spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection. He was inspired by 1930s seaside photos by Lartigue and Japanese woodcut prints — but felt that the outfits needed a little something extra.

He explained to StyleList, “The jewelry collection was truly inspired by need. I wanted the spring collection to have that extra sparkle and shimmer but in a bold way.”

Childhood memories also played a part. “My sister grew up with a traditional charm bracelet,” Som recalled. “I loved the idea of taking something small and delicate and making it bold and eclectic. It’s all about a bold, fun gesture, isn’t it?”.

Sarafpour challenged herself to find an unusual material for jewelry. She was looking for something unexpected yet classic and hit upon ribbon.

“I wanted to do something with jewelry that was very different than what is out there,” she told StyleList. She dreamed up “soft jewelry which makes a bold statement while being surprisingly weightless.”

A third new collection arrived as a spin-off. After a few seasons executing the high-end LowLuv line, model Erin Wasson and jeweler Pascal Mouawad decided to introduce costume jewelry.

The duo decided to branch into more casual items with a lower price point and a simpler, rough-and-tumble style. Aesthetically, they took their cue from an imaginary Southwestern trek.

Their designs incorporate Native American elements (arrow patterns) and shapes found in nature (feathers, bones). And Wasson’s edgy chic style is evident, as there are even a few knuckle-dusters that might help in a bar brawl.

Meanwhile, Ward Kelvin stepped out from major luxury brands and started whipping up high-glamour jewelry. While his name might not yet ring a bell, you’ve likely seen his work for instantly recognizable companies: Tiffany & Co., David Yurman and Estée Lauder.

When striking out on his own, Kelvin indulged his loves for ’30s Hollywood Regency style, chinoiserie and ’70s décor, synthesizing them into a look he dubbed “American Chinoise.” He set out to craft “big looks with a lightness to them, a bit of humor, done in a free-form, sculptural way.”

After years of working for hyper-polished luxury brands, he’s eager to try an earthier style. “It’s what I call organic symmetry,” he told us. “There’s a pattern but it’s not completely perfect; there’s the unique imperfection of the hand-made.”

All these glittery temptations could turn us into magpies. And that’s not even counting Stella McCartney’s “Alice in Wonderland” limited-edition jewelry!

Barbie Gets Designer Treatment: And You Can Bid on One of the 12 CFDA Dolls

Barbie’s LBD received not one, but 12 fab makeovers.

As part of the CFDA’s (Council of Fashion Designers of America) partnership with Mattel’s Barbie, designers have customized a Barbie Basic doll — who dons a little black dress — with shoes, bags, jewelry and more in their trademark styles.

The participating designers include Albertus Swanepoel, Alexis Bittar, Betsey Johnson, Deborah Lloyd of Kate Spade, Devi Kroell, Isaac Mizrahi, Justin Giunta of Subversive Jewelry, Lorraine Schwartz, Monica Botkier, Philip Crangi, Rachel Roy and Tory Burch.

“I made her bright pink shoes with silver studs like my spring shoes,” Roy told StyleList. “I took fabric from my spring collection and made a mixed media dress. The mixed media dresses are the ones Michelle Obama wears from me.”

Adding, “I even had my intern do her hair, because I just couldn’t stop. It was really a lot of fun.”

And for Roy, it was a really useful exercise. “When Barbie was done, I took her to my patternmaker and asked her to duplicate the dress for the fall collection,” she explained. “It’s not working as a dress, but it is working as a shirt. Barbie inspired a piece in my fall collection.”

The packaging for the LBD Barbie is also special. Not only is this the first time the CFDA logo is one the box, but “every box has a randomly assigned quote about the little black dress on it from a CFDA member,” explained CFDA Executive Director Steven Kolb. “It’s really cool because it’s random.”

And there’s more to come with Barbie. “We’re in the second year of a three-year partnership,” Kolb said.

These special edition Barbies will be auctioned off on eBay starting this Thursday, through Feb. 7, with an opening bid of $100.

The entire net proceeds from the sale of these dolls will benefit CFDA’s educational initiatives and scholarship program.

Lingerie brand Eberjey is launching an exclusive line called Bluebird by Eberjey exclusively at Ann Taylor starting Feb. 2. The collection will consist of three groups that will include two bralets, one camisole and nine panty styles available in 10 colors, ranging in price from $16 to $36.

“We are excited to partner with Eberjey and introduce our clients to beautiful, feminine lingerie with gorgeous details and flattering fits. By exclusively carrying Bluebird by Eberjey, we will continue to enhance the Ann Taylor shopping experience and offer another layer of chic, sophisticated style,” an Ann Taylor spokesperson told StyleList.

“This is the first time Ann Taylor is getting into lingerie,” Mariela Rovito, president and co-founder of Eberjey told WWD. “The line is aimed at the existing Ann Taylor customer, but that customer is changing a bit. They are aiming at a different direction and looking at a younger customer.”

And from the looks of the collection, she doesn’t mind being a bit sexy, yet still tastefully feminine.

For a more overtly sexy vibe, see this lingerie company’s topless bikini (as in the swimwear).

How to Look Thin In Skinny Jeans

January 26th, 2010

Filed under: Fashion, Celebrity, Denim, Celebrity Style

Just because skinny jeans are called skinny jeans doesn’t mean they have that affect on the body. On the contrary, the unforgiving, curve-hugging, tapered-bottomed pants are sometimes best left to, well, the skinny.

But since they’ve infiltrated style to such a high degree and managed to stay in fashion for years now, women of all body types want to make those darn skinny jeans work. We’ll admit it — we’ve had some hits and misses with the style ourselves.

Luckily, we’re figured out a few fashion tricks through our own skinny jean test-drives, as well as through observing celebrity style. Jessica Simpson (above, left) is known for falling prey to “fat” outfits, despite being in fantastic shape. Her ultra-light skinnies pictured here unfortunately do make her bum look a bit bigger than it actually is.

The reason? For one, the color. The lighter the pants, the more they draw attention to every woman’s least-loved body part: the thighs. Another issue: They’re baggy. Tapered pants are cut wider at the thigh, so you’ll want them to fit as snug as possible, or they’ll only add width to the area. The final insult? Her jeans end at the ankle, and contrast sharply with her black heels. This has the effect of breaking up the leg line, making them look shorter.

On the other hand, Hilary Duff (above, right) demonstrates a safer style angle. She wears super-dark skinnies, which help downplay the actual dimensions of thighs, so they’re not as noticeable. Then, she tucks them into slim high heel boots of the same color, which helps elongate her legs, for an overall skinny effect. Nice job, Hil!

So if you’re not model-skinny (and really, how many of us are?!) follow Hilary’s lead for wearing skinny jeans, and you’ll have better luck flattering your gorgeous curves.

Turn Something Old into Something New

January 26th, 2010

Because I live in Los Angeles, I can get a kick-start to my spring shopping. I’m always on a budget, so I love sifting through sale racks and rediscovering old favorites in my closet. Last week, I was digging through some old storage boxes, and I found three military-inspired jackets from about four years ago: one in khaki, one in black, and one in olive green.

My olive green jacket hits me about mid-thigh, and I thought: hmm… these would look great with a white top, black leggings, and black leather knee-high boots. I threw  together a quick outfit with some oversize sunglasses, and I felt glamorous.

When it comes to fashion, have fun, experiment with old favorites, go wild, stay within your comfort zone, and keep using your imagination. When something goes out of style, bring it back in a way that is uniquely  you. Sometimes, it’s not about what you wear: it’s about how you wear it.

CFDA ‘Fashion for Haiti’ T-shirts Lend a Hand and Look Good

January 26th, 2010

The good guys that they are, the fashion industry is doing its part to help Haiti.

On behalf of its members, the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) has pulled together a “Fashion for Haiti” T-shirt, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, which is raising funds for immediate, high-impact relief and long-term recovery efforts in the earthquake-stricken country.

The T-shirt features a black-and-lime green logo and was designed by Peter Arnell. The tagline, “Hope Help Heal Haiti,” sits underneath the phrase “To Haiti With Love,” with a map of the nation standing in for the word “Haiti.”

“The shirt will be launched at the beginning of fashion week and will be on sale starting Friday, February 12,” CFDA executive director Steven Kolb told StyleList.

Adding that “Every major retailer from the mass level, to specialty, to department stores and e-commerce sites are involved, and there will be some celebrity involvement.”

The tees are being manufactured by Theory and will be available in men’s and women’s sizes at $25 each.

“As we watch the story unfold in Haiti, it is our obligation to act,” said Theory’s president and CEO, Andrew Rosen, in a release. “We must move quickly to raise the much needed money and support for the relief efforts that are beginning now, and that will be required in the months and years to come.”

Arnell is no stranger to creating iconic T-shirts. He designed the “Fashion for America” mended heart logo T-shirts, sales of which raised over $2 million for the Twin Towers Fund in 2001.

“Fashion for Haiti” T-shirts will also be available at www.cfda.com.

And see how beauty companies are helping Haiti.
